Another possibility to consider

October 4, 2013 § 4 Comments

The lockdown was lifted after just half an hour, but for Carey’s family and friends as well as the police, postpartum depression was becoming an explanation for what otherwise seemed inexplicable.

There is always the possibility that what turned ordinary problems into extraordinary problems wasn’t the postpartum depression itself, but the treatment for postpartum depression.

UPDATE:

Investigators found two medications in Carey’s apartment this week — one used to treat schizophrenia and symptoms of bipolar disorder called Risperidone; the other was Escitalopram, an antidepressant, the source told CNN.

And the other possibility to consider is that anti-depressants weren’t the culprit. Perhaps her psychiatric care was…..let’s say……suboptimal. I’ve got a very good track record at treating post natal depression (none of my patients have ever been hospitalised despite some being quite severely depressed) and SSRI’s are a valuable ‘rescue” medication.

SSRI’s aren’t the culprit here. Either she was psycotic, and thus shouldn’t have been let out of hospital, or, was quite severely depressed to the degree that her judgement was impaired which meant that she should have been hospitalised. The shrinks weren’t doing their job.

You can’t possibly know that, because some of the time they are the culprit. What is maddening – despicable really – is not the medical establishment insisting on their sometime benefits. What is despicable is the wall of denial, when it is known as fact that sometimes, in some cases, SSRIs cause violence and suicide.

Ever notice that men aren’t allowed the Hormones Made Me Do It excuse? It’s female-only.

And feminists are very vocal about calling that “equality”.
