Narrative gloss is such a great way to describe dogmatic Darwinism.

I remember reading that Derbyshire article Witt refers to and being very put off by his smug self-assurance substituting for argument.

Yeah and his strawmen: “…(the theory that life on earth has developed by a series of supernatural miracles performed by the God of the Christian Bible, for which it is pointless to seek any naturalistic explanation)…”My own assessment of the ID business as presently constituted is that it has its problems, but that its problems are if anything fewer and less severe than the problems with Darwinism. Darwinism is like a troop of cheerleaders for scientists: it adds nothing of substance to the game itself, it just makes certain types of men more likely to play it; but instead of total physical possession of pulchritude the limbic appeal is to total intellectual possession of nature. That isn’t necessarily bad for the game, but it shouldn’t be confused with the game.

  • William Luse says:

And more about that strawman: I don’t think ID proposes that a series of supernatural miracles is the necessary explanation, but rather presents certain mathematical and philosophical objections to pure naturalism as the necessary explanation. The thing I don’t get about Derbyshire, a professed Christian, is that he seems unperturbed by the fact that acceptance of the Darwinian account of the origin of man is irreconcilable with a Christian one (perhaps I should say Catholic).

Zip:Just a note to say I think you are mopping the floor with the neodarwinian guys on my blog. And you are affording me great clarity of mind about this issue. Thanks!Mark Shea

Thanks Mark, I hope I’ve added something to the discussion. I will be away from the net for about ten days now, so I had to get my licks in while I could 🙂
